LYFA’s Divan 2 is a stunning pendant lamp designed by Simon P. Henningsen in 1962, consisting of overlapping steel trapezoids carefully assembled one by one. Although they definitely make the luminaire look quite impressive, the trapezoids’ function is not only aesthetic: they also filter the light in a way that makes it comfortable and glare-free. As a result, the Divan 2 pendant provides soft, indirect lighting.
The Divan 2 pendant is named after the eponymous restaurant in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, for which the lamp was originally designed in the 1960s. Stainless steel was chosen as its material to allow Tivoli’s evening lighting to be reflected from its hand-polished surfaces to the delight of guests dining at the restaurant. To add to the lamp’s charm in daylight, the trapezoids were painted in red, purple, blue, green and white on the other side – the multicolored inside gives the lamp a fascinating look that changes depending on the viewer’s position.
